MMoCA Hair Affair

On Thursday, April 28, the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art presented Hair Affair; an exhibition which showcased extraordinary hair designs by Madison-area salons. Each of the 20 featured salons was asked to create an exhibit with a fantasy and fairytale theme.  From the Ice Princess to Alice In Wonderland, the resulting designs were nothing short of breathtaking.

I was lucky enough to spend time with the staff of Hybrid Hair Salon as they built an Alexander McQueen-inspired exhibit called Twisted Manta, named after the late designer’s fantastical self-confessed alter ego. Equipped with a lamp shade, bubble wrap, spray paint, a glue gun and reams of hand-dyed human hair, the stylists showed me why styling hair is a unique art form.

The event itself was held in the lobby of the museum, with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres available for the fashionable crowd. A silent auction was also held in an adjacent room, with items donated by local salons, companies, and stores. All proceeds from tickets and silent auction went toward funding the museum, which offers free exhibitions and education classes year-round.

About halfway through the evening, models descended the exquisite, yet treacherous, glass staircase down into the lobby. A silence came over the bustling crowd as they gazed in awe of the magnificent creations. After the show concluded, the models posed in the lobby for the remainder of the evening as the guests ate, drank and inspected the intricacies of each exhibit.

The Madison Museum of Contemporary Art and the salons, including Hybrid, proved to even the biggest skeptic that hair styling is genuinely an art.
