Editor’s Picks: Emily Connor

Dining and Nightlife Editor Emily Connor shares some of her favorite things with us this holiday season: glitter, glamour and gingerbread.

Glitter

From fabulous sequined frocks and shoes comes the newest sparkly trend to hit the streets. Glitter is everywhere and in every color this fall and winter and can be the perfect complement to any outfit this season. But the sparkly staple doesn’t only have to be around for special occasions and New Year’s Eve. In the right amount and color, glitter can be worn on a daily basis. Wear glitter on your nails (Check out OPI for Sephora’s glittery shades) for a fun pop of color and glamour. And glitterized heels are huge this season. Pair champagne or silver glitter pumps with your average skinny jeans and sweater for an effortless look that pops this season (Check out J. Crew, Piperlime and Modcloth.com).

Glamour

Classic Hollywood chicness and style is front and center in entertainment this winter. Michelle William’s portrayal of Marilyn Monroe in the film My Week with Marilyn pays tribute to one of the most classically glamorous Hollywood icons of our time, making this film a must-see on my list. Steal Marilyn’s glamorous staple with the perfect tube of red lipstick (Try Lime Crime Lipstick in Rouge). And never forget to give the gift of style this season. Try a year’s subscription to Glamour magazine for an easy and great gift for your mom, sister or friend.

Gingerbread

Forever labeled as an old-lady dessert, gingerbread’s spice flavor is often frowned upon by younger generations. But gingerbread’s complex medley of nutmeg, cinnamon, clove and molasses ingredients make it a perfect pairing for your holiday coffee.  For a delicious gingerbread treat, try the gingerbread spice latte at Peet’s Coffee in Memorial Union. And for a fun do-it-yourself gift full of holiday spirit and vintage appeal, try baking your very own gingerbread house. It makes a great homemade gift for moms or grandparents. They’ll love how much it shows you care.
