The popular Mexican restaurant Frida’s shut down last month, taking with it its notorious margaritas. But fortunately for us, State Street’s newest addition in nightlife, Moe’s Tavern, has taken over the tradition.

“Now that Frida’s is closed, we have brought the margaritas that they did over here,” said Travis Splan, general manager of Moe’s Tavern and Grill. “We have frozen margaritas and the house margaritas on tap. We are offering them half-price on Monday and Thursday, which Frida’s used to do.”

The restaurant opened last year on September 1 under the same ownership as Frida’s Mexican Grill.

Located right near the Capitol on the 100th block of State Street, Moe’s offers a fun alternative to bar options in Madison. Breaking from the tavern connotation of hosting in dark, dingy spaces, Moe’s boasts pictures of cartoons and the Simpsons on the walls and offers plenty of bright, casual lounging spots.

The design of Moe’s is interesting, offering five levels of dining and two bars.

“We tried to make a fun, bright atmosphere that is inviting to people,” Splan said.

The menu is full of American comfort food with a slight Mediterranean influence. Moe’s serves traditional tavern food like sliders, fried ravioli, and burgers; but gyros, hummus, and a plethora of salads also grace the menu.

In addition to the highly popular margaritas, Moe’s offers a wide selection of beers, cocktails, martinis, and wines.

“We do have a happy hour, Monday through Friday, 3-6 p.m. That’s including half-price tap beer, $2 rails, and a complimentary appetizer,” said Splan.

Moe’s even offers something beyond food and drinks: entertainment. There is a DJ on Tuesday and Thursday nights as well as karaoke on Saturdays.

What really sets Moe’s apart from other bars on State Street is its breakfast service on Saturdays and Sundays. Moe’s serves traditional items like French toast and omelets and less conventional choices like “Crab Cake Benedict” and a breakfast burger.

“It’s a great place for people to come and hang out with friends,” Splan said. “We’ve got our lounge area upstairs, there’s a pool table in the back, there’s something for everybody here.”

Moe’s Tavern and Grill is located at 118 State Street. Contact them at 608-280-9999 or visit them online at www.moestavernandgrill.com.
