Trend Alert: Peplum
by Marlee Katz
Peplum silhouettes are quite trendy this spring. The peplum silhouette creates an hourglass figure by adding a ruffled fabric around the waist. The silhouette is not just meant for people without curves; it emphasizes a woman’s shape and makes all the other parts appear much smaller. Now who wouldn’t want that?
But how can you pull off this look?
Peplums are seen on everything from dresses to coats and were first introduced in the 1940s by Dior. Dior used it on coats to create a slender waist and hourglass silhouette. The trend reappeared in the 1980s with the infamous shoulder pad.
This look is very flattering and creates a balanced female form. The key to wearing peplum is keeping it modern and making sure it doesn’t look too 80s inspired. The whole point of the trend is to create the illusion of perfectly symmetrical hips and shoulders.
Tops, skirts and dresses are great options to carry out the style. Peplum tops look best with pencil skirts, high-waisted shorts and narrow nipped trousers. Try pairing a peplum blouse or jacket with a pencil skirt and cute heels. Try this Marc by Marc Jacobs top with high waisted shorts or a simple pencil skirt. Keep it casual with this adorable floral peplum bandeau top. Pair it will skinny jeans and heels or cute cut-offs.
Try working in additional trends such as color blocking. To slim the upper body, try a darker color on top with a lighter color on the bottom. To slim the lower body, do the exact opposite. Try pairing Nasty Gal’s Perfect Peplum Skirt with a black or white tank, depending on which part of the body you want to emphasize. Also take a peek at this blue and pink peplum dress by Asos.
