Style Icon: Erin Wasson

by Marlee Katz

As a model, actress, and entrepreneur, Erin Wasson is more than a style icon. From styling Alexander Wang’s shows to developing her own clothing line, Wasson has literally done it all, creating her own eccentric style in the process. She wears what she likes and always looks good. She’s one of those women people want to be like. So even if you can’t be Erin Wasson, you can at least dress like her!

Erin Wasson’s style mixes rocker chic, nineties grunge, and Cali surfer girl. On and off the runway, Wasson knows how to put her lanky little frame together and rock some of the most amazing outfits.

In styling Alexander Wang shows and developing her own line of jewelry, Low Luv, Wasson has made quite the name for herself. She launched her own skate and surf line, RVCA, in 2008. These successes have helped her develop her own personal style.

Wasson’s look is very natural. Her beachy waves make any ensemble look effortless, while her ability to pair unlikely garments epitomizes her personal style. At the Wool and the Gang U.S. debut in 2009, she mixed ombré fur, a polka dot chiffon blouse, and a marled grey bowler hat. This effortless combination made Wasson stand out in the crowd.

At Cannes in May, Wasson looked stunning in both Antonio Berardi and Oscar de la Renta gowns. With help from talented stylist Rachel Zoe, Wasson’s show stopping ensembles, complete with embellishments and prints, strikingly defined her long, slender figure.

In an interview with Dallas News this past June, Wasson explained that she finds inspiration through the way people express themselves. Wasson embodies the laid back and relaxed attitude of a Texas native. She knows how to style worn in boots with a pair of skinny jeans, or a blouse with tiny cut off shorts.

Mixing her Southern style with a New York twist, she has made fringed black cut offs and a black tank her signature uniform. In describing her style, Wasson is quoted, “My style has stayed fairly consistent since I started in the business. Just ask my mom…I just focus on doing my thing, and I try not to listen to all of the opinions.”

Outside Alexander Wang’s studio, Wasson was spotted wearing tie-dye flared pants and an outrageous fringed fur. As Tim Gunn would say, “Make it work.” Wasson always makes it work and always looks effortlessly fabulous.
