If you’re looking to change-up your usual routine, the Comedy Club on State is a great place to start your night. Located underneath the Associated Bank on Dayton and State (across from the Overture Center), it is often easy to walk past without realizing it. But the fact that it can go unnoticed makes the building even more alluring; it’s like a secret club you must discover on your own.
The comedians themselves can be hit or miss, but there are typically 2-3 per show, not including the host who attempts to get the crowd laughing with some cheesy opening jokes. New comedians perform weekly, and many have been featured on nationally-known stages, so you are bound to find someone you enjoy.
But what makes a night at the club a truly great experience is its upscale, fun environment which perfectly balances out the comedy. Once entering the showroom, the eye heads straight for the small well-lit stage in the front corner of an otherwise dark room. Small candle-lit tables circle around the stage, filling out the relatively large room, while bigger booths and leather couches line the back wall, creating an intimate atmosphere for the audience whether you choose to go with a few friends or a larger group.
One downside to the club is their two drink minimum in the showroom, but audience members can buy soda if they’re looking to save money. The Comedy Club features a variety of beers and specialty drinks including frozen drinks ($6), martinis ($8) and jumbo punch bowls ($25). The low admission prices provide a great excuse to splurge on a fun drink. Servers take drink orders throughout the show and bring them to your table so you don’t have to miss anything.
The club offers deals to cater to special occasions like birthdays and bachelorette parties, which could be something exciting to do. For larger groups and on weekend nights, it is recommended to call ahead with reservations. The Comedy Club will require everyone to pay together, but will keep a table reserved for your group until you arrive.
