Street Smart: Classic Chic

Name: Sophie Lillie

Year: Sophomore

Major: Textile and Apparel Design

Wearing: Cocoa Ruffled Jacket – Free People; Indigo Skinny Jeans – DL 1961; Black Leather Sandals – Birkenstock

Inspiration/Icons: As a budding designer, Sophie draws much of her fashion inspiration from prominent designers, especially Elie Saab and Vera Wang, and appreciates the outfits of stylish celebrities like Blake Lively.

Personal Style: Sophie describes her personal style as “girly with an edge.” Her look is feminine without being frilly, and her edge comes from small accents, like studs, which she favors in her accessories.

While on the way out to the fabric store for my Design Studies class, I ran into my friend, Sophie, also heading to the store. Although the cooler weather prevents most of our fashionable outfits from seeing the light of day beneath heavy coats and scarves, Sophie makes the lower temperatures work to her advantage in a ruffled jacket and belted skinny jeans.

Sophie’s style is simply chic, and like the designers she admires, Sophie looks for timeless pieces that embrace trends, but can easily remain in her wardrobe for more than a few seasons. However, regardless of her classic style, Sophie’s outfit has that extra oomph taking it to the next level. Her jacket has structure and character, and the hardware of her belt, accentuated by her tucked in tee, breaks up the linearity in her ensemble.

Even the smallest accents can have major effects on a look, and with the mercury drop welcoming back our favorite jackets, boots, scarves, hats, and mittens, it’s time to liven up our autumn fashion with the perfect highlights!
