Fall Beverages Worth Skipping Starbucks For

By: Paige Schultz and Chloe Karaskiewicz

Whether you’re looking for a delicious latte to drink while strolling through the farmers’ market or you just need a quick pick-me-up before class begins, crisp autumn mornings beg to be accompanied by warm, fall-inspired drinks. However, instead of choosing the typical Starbucks fix, we urge you to go a little outside of your comfort zone. After reviewing countless different coffee shops, we  have compiled a list of five oh-so-yummy seasonal beverages that you may have not thought to try before. They may not be as praised as a Starbucks salted caramel mocha or pumpkin spice latte, but trust us when we say that these drinks are equally as sensational.

Most Unique Drink: Indie Coffee

Indie Coffee’s S’mores Latte, made with dark chocolate Ghirardelli syrup and toasted marshmallow, is not only rather unheard-of, but completely to-die-for. The sweetness of the s’more flavors and the bitterness of the espresso counter each other nicely and make for a truly tasty drink. Indie Coffee

Best Chai Latte: Espresso Royale

Chai is a caffeinated spiced tea—originally from India, Nepal, Tibet and Pakistan—served with milk and sweetener. Espresso Royale’s take on this coffee-free classic is spiced but mellow, without an after kick. Chai Lattes are also served well at Steep & Brew and Indie Coffee though these Chai drinks are more spiced with a slightly sharper taste. Go to Espresso Royale on latte Wednesday– where you can get any sized latte for just $2.

Best Apple Cider: Indie Coffee

What autumn would be complete without a steaming cup of hot apple cider? This seasonal
favorite gets fancy at Indie Coffee on Regent, its natural tartness complimented by a dash of
cinnamon and/or a drizzle of Ghirardelli caramel.

Espresso RoyaleBest Pumpkin Latte: Espresso Royale

The Pumpkin Pie Latte made with sweetened condensed milk, pumpkin spice syrup and espresso was especially sweet. The pumpkin flavoring of the drink really stands out; a feature I had not noticed as much in other pumpkin spice lattes. Top it with whipped cream and a dash of cinnamon and your taste buds will be in heaven.

Best Cinnamon Latte: TIE – Coffee Bytes and Indie Coffee

When it came to choosing between which cinnamon latte was better, a decision could simply not be made. Both drinks from Coffee Bytes and Indie Coffee stood out for very different, but equally delicious reasons.

Coffee Bytes’ Cinnamon Roll Latte: Made with brown sugar and cinnamon syrup this drink was especially delicious. Literally, you feel like you’re drinking a cinnamon roll. No complaints here!Coffee Bytes

Indie Coffee’s Cinnamon Mocha: Made with dark chocolate Ghirardelli syrup and premium cinnamon this latte was surprisingly delicious. Who knew chocolate and cinnamon would make such an amazing combination?

Interested in trying these drinks? Indie Coffee is located at 1225 Regent St. Coffee Bytes is located at 799 University Square, on the corner of University and East Campus Mall. Espresso Royale has two downtown locations and can be found at 650 State St. and 224 State St.
