I was first captivated by this budding star after my roommate, an underground music guru, spotted the artist while we were in an LAX terminal. Her matching pea green pant and top combination perfectly complimented her flowing auburn hair. Paired with laid-back gray Converse, her look was effortlessly cool. Ever since that initial sighting, I have become obsessed with all things Lana. From her emotional ballads to her vintage-inspired looks, Lana Del Rey is the epitome of music-infused style.
Lana Del Rey made her first major impression in the music industry with her song Video Games in June 2011, which accumulated over 20 million views on YouTube within the first five months of its debut. She then released her first album, Born To Die, in January 2012, which not only sold over 2.8 million copies worldwide but also charted at number one on the Official UK Album Chart. With her international popularity exploding, it didn’t take long for the fashion world to pick up on this stunning songstress. Her unusual combination of striking looks, effortlessly cool style and sultry vocals led her to grace the covers of GQ and British and Australian Vogue magazines. Lana’s contributions to the industry continued when she signed with NEXT Model Management, and she is currently the face and inspiration for H&M’s fall line.
While she does have a distinct look, each of Lana’s videos captures a different facet of her unique sense of style. With her auburn hair in classic Veronica Lake waves, full lips, perfectly winged eyeliner, and artistically constructed manicures, Lana perfects an individual look that she described to British Vogue in their February 2012 issue as “Gangster Nancy Sinatra” and “Lolita got lost in the hood.” To complement this classically beautiful look, Lana favors vintage ensembles. In some moments in Born To Die, she resembles a modern day Grace Kelly in a glamorous white gown with a veil of white roses, and in others embodies a stereotypical 80’s teen in a bright-white fringed moto-jacket with high-waisted denim shorts. On a simpler note, Lana shows off her natural beauty in ‘Video Games’ as she opts for minimal off-the-shoulder tops and gold jewelry. Off set, her look is reminiscent of the 50’s and 60’s, but with her frequent use of gaudy gold jewelry she adds a 90’s twist.
This up-and-coming artist is entirely and unapologetically herself, reflecting her individuality in both her music and style. She forgoes the popular and trendy for her own look and sound, ignoring the influences of mainstream culture. By truly being herself, Lana Del Rey makes for the perfect style icon, a fashion inspiration that exudes that much-sought-after confidence only attainable by knowing exactly who you are.
