Patrick Junior Chukwuem Okogwu, aka Tinie Tempah, might not be the biggest name here in the states, but this Nigerian-born British rapper has certainly turned heads across the pond. This up-and-coming artist caught the attention of music lovers in the UK with his number one debut single “Pass Out” in 2010, followed by the popular hit “Written In the Stars.” He has since collaborated and toured with the likes of Jay-Z, Rihanna and Chiddy Bang, but it’s not only his music that keeps this Brit on par with the hottest in the business. Tinie Tempah has always been renowned for his style game, marrying the latest trends with his own modern, geek-chic look.
Crowned by British GQ as Britain’s Best-Dressed Man in 2012, this rapper certainly has an eye for cool. While he does tend to stick to a few staples, almost always wearing a uniform of thick-rimmed Ray-Ban glasses, dark wash denim and a pair of vibrant 80’s kicks, Tempah likes to toy with the latest trends as well. He actively pays attention to what’s hot on the runways and seamlessly infuses their looks with his own personal style. This eclectic assortment of inspiration is seen in his affinity for layering, incorporating everything from puffy vests to retro jackets and sweaters to sleek blazers, all in a vibrant array of colors and patterns.
And don’t think for a moment that his look isn’t entirely his own. As he confessed to GQ in April 2012, he’s “a fan of fashion from high end to streetwear, from Nike to Comme des Garçons,” always looking “to find things that are a little bit more high-end and unique.” It is precisely this desire for a merging of the street, chic and unique that inspires his clothing line Disturbing London, which features high-end t’s and jackets, as well as an exclusive line of Nike sneakers.
In all, Tinie Tempah is more than worthy of the Style Icon title. He is the king of cool, taking risks and constantly striving to stand out from the crowd. And I mean, come on, who doesn’t love a stylish man with a British accent?
