Making the Most of Madison Over Winter Break

Since the excitement of the holidays has died down, some of you may be headed back to Madison for the rest of winter break. And if you think sitting on the couch watching television is the only thing to do, think again! This past year, several new stores, bars and restaurants opened in downtown, and if your semester was anything like mine, you were too busy to visit them all. From fashion to fitness, here is our list of must-try Madison establishments to keep you from feeling the winter blues too soon.

To Drink & Dine

S2 Pizza Bar | 558 State St.

Inspired by the simplicity of Neapolitan style pizza, S2 Pizza Bar features a wood-fired stove. The restaurant, a vision of Ian Garfield of Ian’s Pizza, serves up slices of Wisconsin culture; cheese, sausage and bacon. Stop in on a Wednesday for date night — $20 for pizza, salad and a bottle of wine.

Buck and Badger | 115 State St.

If you’re in Madison but wishing you were still at home, or better yet, up north, Buck and Badger is the place for you. The restaurant and bar features rustic comfort food, including pot pies, lamb burgers and 24 craft beers. For the ultimate up-north experience, sit by the fireplace and order S’mores for dessert.

Dlux | 117 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive

The modern-retro bar and restaurant is a great place to go when you’re looking to get dressed up and go out, but don’t want to spend too much. Stop in at night for a drink or a burger (they’re all $8!) and come back the next morning for a brunch featuring breakfast sandwiches, fresh donuts and bottomless mimosas.

To Shop

State and Lake Clothing Co. | 673 State St.

This clothing store is named after its location and is the UW Bookstore’s funnier and slightly more inappropriate cousin. Some of the popular Badgers, Packers and Brewers gear sold here can be found at the Bookstore, but many items are specialty or value-priced. Where else can you find a t-shirt that reads, “Take a Pitcher, it lasts longer?”

Moda Italy Fashion | 18 N. Carroll St.

If you haven’t made it to Moda Italy Fashion on the Square, the post-holiday sale alone is enough reason to do so. The sophisticated and stylish men’s boutique boasts a storewide sale of 25 – 50% off select suits, sweaters and accessories. A full-time tailor is on staff to help Madison men look their best.

SEE | 437 State St.

This winter, Selective Eyewear Elements came to town and brought their designer glasses with them. Each pair of frames featured in the store was designed specifically for SEE, and many have been featured in Elle, GQ, InStyle and Marie Claire. The store also sells contact lenses and provides eye exams.

To Relax

CYC Fitness |773 University Ave. #205

A Room of One’s Own | 315 W. Gorham St.

If you are searching for a good book to read, this is the place to go. Over the summer, A Room of One’s Own and Avol’s Books joined forces to create a bookstore twice the size. The store offers tons of classics and used books for discounted prices, and also gets new books in often. I recommend “Friends like Us,” the newest by Milwaukee’s Lauren Fox.
