Few places in the world intrigue me quite like the melting pot that is California. I was given a mere taste of what this western gem has to offer while traveling there for spring break last year and have been dying to go back! So, naturally, I was exceptionally jealous when one of my good friends left for an internship in the state this past month. While I stayed in a hotel just outside LA, my free-spirited comrade stayed in Oakland, a city much further north and much more eclectic. The city itself is bursting with individuality. Walking down a street in Oakland is like walking through an urban vintage heaven, where street store walls are covered in attractively bright street art and residents swathe themselves in equally artistic ensembles. Out of this cornucopia of creativity, so my friend tells me, comes clothing storeowner and local style icon Ferriss Mason.
Though she might not have the level of notoriety of the other icons we usually cover, her distinct style and general outlook on fashion make this entrepreneur beyond worthy of our attention.
Ferriss Mason is a professional stylist by trade and President of Urban Vintage Style Management, a boutique styling brand based in Oakland, CA that seamlessly fuses vintage clothing with contemporary style. Her concept is basic: as she told the Examiner, “I try to fill the void I see with women wanting to dress their best without spending all of their hard earned money, thus incorporating vintage items which can usually be found for cheap to reasonable prices.” Accordingly, she spends a lot of time at thrift and vintage stores to find just the right pieces to sell through her aptly named online shop, URBNVNTG. On top of running her online business, Ferriss also offers wardrobe styling, personal shopping, wardrobe/closet assessment, and thrifting tips for those of us who feel just a tad overwhelmed walking into Goodwill.
It’s this eye for vintage clothing that makes her personal style truly and entirely her own. Ferriss knows precisely how to work vintage pieces into her wardrobe, creating a seamless fusion between urban chic and California cool.
With her eye for the unique, confidence to rock anything and the ability to do so without breaking the bank, she is precisely the type of fashionista to whom we can all aspire. As her webpage so boldly proclaims, “It’s about having style, not being in style.”
And it truly is.
