Bar Review: Paul’s Club

In case you haven’t noticed, Paul’s Club got a lot bigger. But is it better?

Duh, of course it’s better. Now you don’t have to trip over the people sprawled out on the comfy seating across from the bar. For some reason folks still like to stand around in between that area, clogging up traffic, but at least now there is plenty of other space to relocate.

The only possible downside to the larger capacity is that the tree looks a bit smaller and more dead. But despite its exponential growth, Paul’s Club has managed to retain its ultra-comfy vibe. Cozying up to friends or strangers in those snug green seats continues to put you at ease.

I recently read an online review that complained the atmosphere had a lot of “‘pretension.'” Don’t listen to that person, they couldn’t be farther from the truth. The crowd is a near-even mix of college students, young professionals and sometimes even a healthy dose of 40+, and they still have an above-average selection of beers. I usually get a Three Floyds Gumballhead whenever I go, as I’ve never seen it at another bar in Madison that gets as consistently busy as Paul’s Club. The specials are pretty weak mostly because there’s no variation, but drinks remain reasonably priced.

One of my favorite things about this place is the service. They have probably the quickest and nicest bartenders in any establishment that serves alcohol on State Street. That is no hyperbole. If you bought five consecutive drinks and closed your tab after every purchase (don’t do that) and didn’t tip once (especially don’t do that) they’d still be nice to you.

Also, although barely having any online or social media presence, their tree has a twitter. That is hilarious/awesome. Follow it: @PaulsClubTree
