Fall 2013 Accessory Trends

I feel that all too often people overlook the genre of accessories when “ooing” and “ahhing” over an outfit. After all, an outfit is only perfect when paired with the right combination of shoes, bag and assorted jewelry. If I learned one thing from Fall 2013 fashion month (other than how much I wish I wasn’t a broke college student), it is that accessories are the touch of sea salt to your dark chocolate truffle – a little surprise to the palate and, together, combine in a lovely taste.

As tradition holds, the move from spring to fall showed a general shift from daring colors to blacks and neutrals. That being said, some designers dared to be bold, adding sparks of red, cobalt and yellow to their accents. But have no fear. Any lack of color was made up through detailed textures, such as snakeskin, furs, studs, metallics and patent leather, just to name a few. No matter what was used, each detail in an accessory was meticulously constructed and weighed with the entire ensemble in mind. All in all, it was a great season. Without further ado: the trends in accessories for Fall 2013.

Two words. Ankle boots. From A to Z, almost every designer sent multiple models down the runway with heeled boots. But, naturally, the same shape was represented in an incredible variety of styles – I mean, would we actually expect any less? From Altuzarra’s patent leather to Bottega Veneta’s oxford style to Ralph Lauren’s fur touch to Vera Wang’s innovative ankle strap, there’s no denying creativity in ankle boots exceeded expectations.

The top fashion houses also showed a range of different shoe heights. Oxfords graced the runway on more than one occasion, with my personal favorite being Burberry Prorsum’s leopard print oxford. Small, dainty heels were represented by Dolce & Gabbana’s red kitten heels with petite lace and bead details and Christian Dior’s futuristic Mary Janes, while Vivienne Westwood and Stella McCartney took tall, chunky options to a whole new level with their thick heeled booties.

Say goodbye to spring’s tiny, delicate purses and get ready for the fierce. Purses for fall are here to make a statement, decked in chains, studs and animal prints of all kinds.

Snakeskin is absolutely huge this season – every major designer had at least a few purses patterned with the leathery mark of the reptile. Christian Dior stuck to a basic black that could be paired with both casual and dressy attire. Dolce & Gabbanna and Prada made statements in blaring, saturated red, while Marc Jacobs depicted a realistic python’s brown skin for an exotic feel.

Chain handles added some edge to more feminine quilted purses. I’m a bit obsessed with Chanel’s innovative cobalt “purse-clutch,” a veritable purse-and-clutch all in one.

Studs were also added to handbags of all sizes. Burberry Prorsum’s leopard and plaid clutches took their classic looks to a different level with the embellishment, and Valentino elaborated his small clutches with fun beaded studs for a sweeter, delicate impression.

Mmm, arm candy is my favorite candy – and it looked like designers had the same sweet tooth this fall. Balenciaga added beautiful silver knot bangles to their classic black and white ensembles, while Giorgio Armani layered a few sparkly pieces atop one other to create a dramatic look powerful enough to make any bling-obsessed girl’s mouth drop. Gold pieces were huge, too. Bottega Veneta showed off a cuff in a beautiful camo that I hope to one day call my own. Oh, and don’t forget to invest in something “chainlike” – Chanel stacked thick chain-detailed bangles to create a rough contrast to the sheer drapes of the clothes.

Metallic, metallic, metallic. You must invest in some sort of metallic belt (or any accessory) this season! Burberry wrapped a structured silver belt around a red dress while Calvin Klein chose to stick their metallic touch on the front, adding a large, solid rectangular metal belt buckle. Prada’s belt didn’t actually contain metal – it encompassed the feel, though, cast in a bronze metallic hue. All were simple in design but extravagant in their effect, so get ready to shine this fall.
