If you’ve been craving to look like an Avatar this fall, you’re in luck. If you’re into a makeup-free look with only a dab of mascara, you’re also in luck. Fashion month for Fall 2013 was a huge hub for makeup trends of all varieties. It’s hard to pick one trend as the crowd sweeper; however, it is easier to separate them into two categories: the “fresh-faced” looks and the obviously eye-catching “daring diva” looks.
The Daring Diva Looks
I applaud any designer who’s able to spend as much effort into creating a great, bold makeup look as they do in the outfit itself. As Shelley says in The House Bunny, “the eyes ARE the nipples of the face”. Sometimes it’s necessary to put in that extra “oomph” to make the face really incroyable. Fall 2013 is a season of audacious makeup: white, silver, vivid matte black and … avatar green?!
Anna Sui: The fierce matte black eye may be dramatic, but it’s also very chic for fall. This look can accompany nearly any outfit and makes any evening event just a tad more scandalous.
Chanel: This amazing makeup by Chanel could be a favorite off the runways this coming season. With the sparkle of a disco ball, this eye look makes an entrance for any even. The nude lips and rosey cheeks add to the eye intensity.
Dior: Whoever said “you can’t wear white after Labor Day” obviously never met Christian Dior. This drastic white-silver eyeliner, coupled with a dabbed pink lip, make quite the statement in colliding a color of winter with one of summer.
Vivienne Westwood: This beauty look was the most extreme on the runway – but then again, it IS Vivienne Westwood. Though this model looks as if she could have walked out of Avatar or any show on Syfy, this look brings together interesting colors for fall. Bright yellow usually dominates spring and summer beauty trends, and thus its pairing with mint green in a fall look is unconventional and divine.
The Fresh Face Looks
This season also offers many beauty looks that are chic and attainable for the average woman. These styles cast skin in a clean, luxurious softness, without creating too young an appearance. Complimenting these natural looks were warm colors splashed across lips and used as subtle smoky eye shadows. It’s these looks that attract the ever-lazy college student, who only has five minutes to quickly assemble a socially acceptable makeup look on Monday mornings (though admit it: many of us compromise that ideal makeup look for another whack at the snooze button). This coming season, designers are proving that beauty can be both pleasant to the eye and the clock.
Alexander Wang: Alexander Wang’s models were the most natural-faced on the runways. With emphasis on contouring and powerful eyebrows, this option shows that women can look sexy while expressing the inner femininity.
Derek Lam: Maple lips are one of my favorites year-round. Lam’s warm beauty look reminds me of those autumn days when the leaves are falling; it’s a simple look achievable with the simplest of lipsticks and defined eyebrows.
Givenchy: The models for Givenchy may have sported Thing 1 and Thing 2 blue curly wigs, but their makeup was sensationally nude. The intense eyebrows, peach lips and smoky blush-colored eye mesh together for an overall achievable and fun neutral look.
Stella McCartney: McCartney’s models, like Alexander Wang’s, put the emphasis on the clothing and less on the face. This baby-soft look is wonderfully put together with a natural, supple pink lip.
