It had been a rough week of classes packed with exams, papers and quizzes and all I wanted was for it to be over and for the weekend to begin. I have no Friday classes and Thursday typically marks the start of my weekend. It is my time to relax and pat myself on the back from the previous hard week of work. What better way to do that than to grab a friend and head to a local bar for a drink?

Last Thursday, a friend and I went to Icon on State Street. While it is a great restaurant specializing in tapas and fancy dishes, I personally love the restaurant because of its fancy cocktail and drink menu. We walked in and headed straight to the bar. I love going to Icon on Thursdays because they have the half-off Sangria special. We ordered a pitcher of the apple-flavored Sangria, which in total gave us about four glasses. They also have flavors in peach, raspberry, a white wine and a red wine. It normally costs around $20, but is only $10 on Thursdays- such a deal. The drink is very sweet with a slight apple tint. You can taste the alcohol, but the drink wouldn’t be my first choice if you were going for an alcoholic buzz.

Ultimately, the menu at Icon has a plethora of drink options, depending on what you are in the mood for. The bartender at Icon gave us the recipe for the tasty sangria to make it at home. Add one cup of the following to a bowl or pitcher:

  • Any white table wine
  • Carvel Xo Brandy
  • Triple sec orange liqueur
  • Sugar (use Truvia or Splenda if you want a lighter calorie drink)
  • Any apple flavoring (or fruit flavoring of your choice)
  • Cut up apples and/or mixed berries

If you want a drink with a stronger flavor, I would order the “How to Marry a Millionaire.” This is a sweet and pinkish/red cocktail with a smooth and thin texture. The drink is a great mix of a strong vodka and sugar and is the perfect drink if you want something that is stronger than the Sangria. The cocktail has a few frozen strawberries mixed in with Stoli pomegranate, Skyy raspberry and an orange liqueur.
