The Cooper’s Tavern is a great choice for quality late-night food that is both moderately priced and utterly delicious. Even though there is typically a wait at dinner and nighttime, this restaurant is more than worth it.
If you are a fan of the restaurant’s daytime menu, you will be very content with the late-night choices. There are a few more snack options on the late-night menu but it is mainly comprised of the restaurant’s most popular dishes.
According to the restaurant’s general manager, Peter McElvanna, the Cooper’s Burger is the most popular item on the late-night menu. It is made from ground beef topped with cheddar cheese and pork belly. It comes with lettuce, onion, mayonnaise and pickles on a Kaiser roll. The burger is perfectly stacked and is brought out with homemade chips. However, it is very greasy. If you are looking for a lighter late-night option, the Brussels sprouts salad may be more up your alley.
This salad is comprised of pan-roasted sprouts and Boston lettuce. It is served with croutons and bacon on top. The Brussels sprouts are cut into small crunchy pieces and blue cheese is lightly scattered throughout the salad. However, this salad comes with a very creamy garlic dressing so ask for the dressing on the side if you want to maintain that lighter taste.
The beer cheese pretzels are another great late night option. The order comes with three five-inch baked pretzel sticks that are crispy on the outside and warm and doughy on the inside. It is served with a thin, spicy Belgian beer and cheddar cheese dip sauce. This is the perfect snack to share because you still get that delicious taste but it is relatively light and you will not feel overfull.
The restaurant’s French fries, listed as “Poutine” on the menu, are also delicious. They are very hot and perfectly crispy with a touch of cheese and gravy. These fries could serve as a good alternative to the chips that come with the burger or as another great appetizer to share with friends.
If you feel like drinking with your late night meal, the Cooper’s Tavern offers a plethora of beer options. The Fox Barrel Blackberry Pear is only five dollars and contains 6.9% alcohol, which is a relatively high percentage for beer. It is a very sweet cider with a thin texture. It has a mild cherry flavoring and it is not that carbonated. A sweet cider or any other beer could be the perfect touch with your late-night dish.
The Cooper’s Tavern is a very social and casual atmosphere with great service. While it is constantly busy, the crowd inside the restaurant is continuously changing.
“You get some younger people late at night. Day time its very professional oriented,” Peter McElvanna said. “Lots of families at dinner time and late night will be you know people drinking beers.”
The Cooper’s Tavern is open from 11 a.m. until midnight during the week and 9 a.m. until midnight on the weekends. It is located at 20 West Mifflin Street right by the Capitol. There may be a wait, but the moderately priced and tasty food is worth it.
