Style Icon: Pretty Little Liars’ Hanna Marin

SHAY MITCHELL, ASHLEY BENSON, TROIAN BELLISARIOWhether she’s dodging death traps set by A, caught in a lip lock with her man Caleb or sneaking into mental hospitals, Pretty Little Liars’ Hanna Marin’s vibrant, head-turning style is notably always in check.

While the life of a teenage detective can be demanding, Hanna never fails to report for duty without sporting one of her accessories-laden, vibrant ensembles.  Her style is unique of her partners in crime.  It encapsulates the bohemian, sporty and preppy elements of Aria’s, Emily’s and Spencer’s wardrobes respectively, while incorporating a feminine touch of glamour.

Hanna’s style embodies the life of a young, flirty Hollywood fashionista, while the town of Rosewood is a virtual runway complete with a strict heels-only policy.  As she infamously remarked on Spencer’s suggestion to wear sensible shoes on a past episode, “I wear three inches or nothing.”  She never allows the girls’ mystery-solving shenanigans to limit her opportunity to look fabulous.

Hanna’s glamorous go-to ensembles typically feature some form of a blazer.  She’s has been featured in past PLL episodes donning blazers varying in design from neon orange, feather-printed, plaid and striped.  She usually pairs her blazers with a top of contrasting color or print.  If she doesn’t do so, she’ll add a vibrant handbag, detailed belt or flashy piece of statement jewelry.

Hanna’s knack for mixing and matching different elements of her ensemble took off with the recent color-blocking trend. Two of Hanna’s best color-blocking looks were a three-toned maxi dress and a yellow and blue strapless dress that she matched with a skinny pink belt.  Complementary color pops are an essential element of Hanna’s dynamic style.

Although she’s a fictional character leading an arguably unrealistic lifestyle, Hanna’s relentless urge to embrace Rosewood in style shows us that we shouldn’t use daily excursions like class, library trips or club meetings as an excuse to stifle our own style standards. Fashion is embraceable in virtually every life setting, even in solving the murder of your best friend.
