It has often been said that, “two is better than one,” and in terms of style the Olsen twins undoubtedly prove this to be true. Known for their “dumpster chic” look by draping their waifish frames with oversized sweaters, fur coats and sunglasses, the Olsen sisters’ style is always on trend. Despite their sometimes unkempt appearance, they always accent with subtle luxuries like a cashmere muffler, Balenciaga lariat bag, or the classic Starbucks venti and cigarette. The two have been seen parading around the city since 2004 as NYU students putting a minimalist-inspired flare on classic looks from the 60’s.
Bringing their boho-chic look to the red carpet, it is no surprise that the twins go for vintage, oversized gowns that accentuate their personal style. For example, at the Met Gala the ladies opted for vintage Dior and Chanel ensembles with subtle, luxurious details speaking to each ensemble’s elegance.
Beyond being known as fashion icons, the twins’ fashion labels, The Row and Elizabeth and James, dominate the fashion industry. In fact, The Row just won Womenswear Designer of the Year at the CFDAs. Carrying their personal sense of style through to their labels, both clothing lines speak to the Olsen sisters’ unique taste in fashion. Elizabeth and James, the grungier and edgier label, accepts the idea of “fit” as a ruthlessly modern sensibility. The label embraces oversized blazers with higher-than-average armholes, emulating Paris couture jackets and baggy boy-friend pants. Contrastingly, The Row goes for the more idealistic sensibility, proving to women that luxury pieces never go out of style, like that “perfect” blazer or “perfect pea coat.”
Viewed as trendsetters throughout the industry in their design and personal style efforts, no one can rock the “dumpster look” better than this dynamic fashion duo.
