BeYOUtiful: The Detox Diaries

Detox Diaries

New Year, new me … sound familiar? January is the month of new beginnings and goal setting. It is a month of reflection and redirection. Some resolve to find adventure, others to find love. For many, though, a new year means the chance to finally get healthy: to go to the gym more, to eat the right foods and to lose a few of those “holiday pounds.” If you fall under this category, this detox diary might be the perfect read for you.

As our lives become increasingly busy, it is more difficult to find the time to be healthy. Often times healthier meals take longer to prepare and require many more ingredients. Similarly, working out requires you to change, actually walking to the gym, working out and then walking home where you must shower and get ready before the rest of your day can resume. On a Monday night, after a full day of classes, that simple work out becomes a daunting task.

In order to motivate yourself towards a healthier you, I propose a challenge: the three-day detox. For three days you must only consume all-natural foods, you must sweat for at least 50 minutes and you must avoid most caffeinated beverages (green tea being the one exemption). This detox will help you not only shed some pounds, but it will also remove toxins that are currently plaguing your system.

Each day you requires four smoothies: one for breakfast, one for lunch, one for dinner and one as a snack. To purchase the necessary ingredients for this cleanse, I went to a local grocery store that had reasonable prices. Altogether, my shopping bill amounted to around $20.

What You Will Need:

  • 1 blender
  • 3 cups blueberries
  • 3 cups raspberries
  • 2 mangos
  • 1 pineapple
  • 2 green apples
  • 4 lemons
  • 3 bananas
  • 2 limes
  • 6 cups kale
  • 1 avocado
  • 3 cucumbers
  • 1 cup spinach
  • 9 stocks celery
  • 4 cans of coconut water
  • 6 tablespoons flaxseeds (whole)
  • 3 green tea bags
  • 3 multivitamins

Breakfast

Each morning, start your day off with a cup of green tea with half of a sliced lemon in it. The lemon juice will help to detoxify your body while the green tea offers a touch of that much-needed morning dose of caffeine. If you suffer from caffeine withdrawals later in the day, help yourself to another cup of green tea. After your tea, start with your first meal: the breakfast smoothie. This smoothie is designed to reduce bloating and give your body energy to start the day.

BREAKFAST SMOOTHIE:

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tbsp flax seed
  • 1 cup raspberries
  • 1 banana
  • ¼ cup spinach

Lunch

For lunch, prepare to load your body with tons of energy. This smoothie was my least favorite but it did a good job at keeping me full. I grew to have a love-hate relationship with lunch. Tip: To make this smoothie easier to drink, blend the mixture for a long time so that it becomes more of a juice-like drink.

LUNCH SMOOTHIE:

  • 3 stalks celery
  • 1 cup kale
  • 1 cucumber
  • ½ green apple
  • ½ lime
  • 1 cup pineapple
  • ½ cup water

Dinner

The dinner smoothie is all about rehydrating your body and restoring electrolytes. Also, due in part to the avocado, this smoothie will offer the necessary fiber for your body. Along with this smoothie, take a multivitamin for additional nutrients in your diet.

DINNER SMOOTHIE:

  • ½ cup mango
  • ½ cup blueberries
  • 1 can coconut water
  • 1 cup kale
  • ¼ of an avocado
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp flax seed

*For a snack throughout the day, repeat your favorite smoothie. You may have to buy additional ingredients based on your preference of smoothie.*

After making it through the third day, begin easing back into regular foods. Be conscious of the sacrifices you made throughout the past three days and reflect it into your diet. Gorging on fast food and frozen pizza may be all that you want to do but they will also reverse the effects of your cleanse.

This detox is designed to reset your metabolism and reduce the toxins within your body. You can expect to lose around 3 to 5 pounds and see a significant loss of bloating. Most importantly, this cleanse will help increase energy, focus and your overall health. These benefits will help increase your general happiness and will exemplify your natural beauty. The most beautiful people are not created by expensive makeup and lavish hairstyles. True beauty is the result of confidence, joy and personality.
