This weeks adventure isn’t as exciting as a trip halfway across the world, but it did involve a fun night out in Madison with my lovely mother. I got home from China and I slept until 4:00 p.m. because the jet lag was too real. As I was scanning social media, I noticed pictures of people at the musical version of Dirty Dancing, which happens to be my mom’s favorite. I asked my mom if it was still playing and she ecstatically asked if I wanted to go … that very night. I’m all for spur of the moment, but the musical started at seven and we live an hour away.
Then I remembered my philosophy, and saw the glimmer of hope in my mother’s eyes. So I decided “why not?”
We went to the musical, and we had the time of our lives. The music was amazing; the dancing was unbelievable. My mother kept exclaiming how happy she was that we decided to come. I walked out of the Overture with a sloppy grin on my face. Musicals are my guilty pleasure, and Dirty Dancing was one of the best musicals I have ever seen.
I now want to become an amazing dancer, and find a boy who can throw me around in the air and do crazy lifts. I already promised my mother that my wedding dance will be to “I’ve Had The Time Of My Life” and my husband and I will learn all of the steps. Immediately after the musical, I wanted to go home, snuggle up with my puppy, and watch Patrick Swayze do his thing in the original movie. My favorite part of the night was getting to spend time with my mother who I haven’t been able to see a lot lately with traveling and school.
My mother truly is my best friend, and a girls’ nights like that meant more to me than any drunken night out on the town. I love my mom and the wisdom she imparts on me. I think it’s important that we all remember where we came from and the people who helped us get to where we are now.
Dirty Dancing taught me so many important lessons: it reminded me how much I absolutely adore my mother and it also reminded me how important it is to stand up for what is right. I feel as if my generation often forgets the importance of morals and values. So many people are unfaithful, dishonest, and disrespectful and that’s not how it should be. I truly believe it’s important to fight for something. So find something you’re passionate about and fight for what is right. Fight for the good of the future.
Remember: nobody puts baby in a corner.
