Finding Your Health Routine: Healthy Snacking

The perpetual “on the go” lifestyle of college students is something that, as a freshman, I find overwhelming. Amidst the chaos of acclimating to a new environment and routine (both in and out of the classroom), making healthy choices becomes a difficult task. Without a lot of time to be picky each day, college students often find themselves grabbing a quick, but unhealthy snack in-between classes. To help you master the art of healthy snacking, consider these health alternatives that you are free grab and go, guilt free.

The Tasty Classic: The Luna Bar

Luna Bars are a necessity for my everyday snacking. They are marketed as a women’s nutrition bar, containing nutrients that are typically missing from a woman’s diet. However, they don’t discriminate; men are free to enjoy these delicious treats as well! Each bar includes what Luna calls the “core 4” nutrients essential to women’s health: calcium, folic acid, iron and vitamin D. A great source of energy to keep you moving, these bars contain seven to ten grams of protein, three to four grams of fiber, and only about 180-190 calories. Of utmost importance, of course, they’re also delicious and come in a wide variety of flavors, ranging from lemon zest, to chocolate peppermint stick. Bonus points; they are gluten free!

 

Not Your Grandma’s Granola: KIND Healthy Grain clusters

If you need to switch things up from the standard bar form, try loose granola! Many brands carry their own version of this versatile and nutritional favorite. Coming in tons of flavors, eat a handful alone for a tasty snack, sprinkle some crumbles on greek yogurt (we’ll get there shortly), or pour some in a bowl and add milk like cereal. Smooth & Creamy Greek Yogurt: FAGE Total Split Cup

A source of calcium, protein, magnesium and natural probiotics, greek yogurt is a staple in my snacking diet. Not only is it health but also surprisingly filling. FAGE is a go-to brand because its products comes in so many varieties, including its Total Split Cup variation. The cups are divided in half, with one side containing your choice of whole-milk, two-percent or fat-free yogurt, and the other filled with your choice of topping. There’s a wide range of choices available, including blueberry acai, honey and cherry pomegranate. A delicious treat that can be enjoyed with breakfast, lunch and anywhere in between, this snack is a major key to healthy snack success.

 

Fruit of the Moment: The Apple

It goes without saying that apples make the ideal snack to eat when you’re in a hurry. Not only are they easily transportable but are also perfect for when your midday sweet tooth hits. In fact, he saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” actually does hold some truth. Eating an apple each day has been proven to lessen the chances of type 2 diabetes development. Now is perfect timing, too, as the delicious Honeycrisp apple- the perfect combination of sweet, firm, and a little tart- is now in season!

 

Blue is the New Black: Garden of Eatin’ Organic Blue Tortilla Chips

A bag of chips is commonly the archetypal snack. However, you don’t have to settle for a bag of overly salty, dissatisfying potato chips. Instead, substitute them with a healthier, the more colorful; the blue corn chip. Containing more protein than white tortilla chips, Garden of Eatin’ Organic Blue Chips are great for when you’re craving a the crunch of chips, but still want to be health-conscious.
