Pucker Up and Protest

One year ago, the outcome of the presidential election shocked many. 2017 is continuing to bring nasty surprises, and many living in the United States are having increased anxiety over the future of the country. These people likely wonder if there is anything they can do to fix the problems that keep resurfacing. Fear not, because there are plenty of ways to help out on a small scale, including one new way. One that involves lipstick.

The Lipstick Lobby, a new movement dedicated to maintaining positivity during these trying times, combines the love of lipstick with the need to take a stand against oppressive policies. The brand released two shades, “Kiss My Pink” and “Outrage.” Kiss My Pink is the original — a bright, poppy fuchsia designed to flatter all skin tones, while Outrage, a blue-toned red, is the new addition. Both lipsticks are vegan, cruelty and paraben free, and only take $19 out of your pocket. The best is yet to come, however.

With your purchase of Kiss My Pink, The Lipstick Lobby will donate 100% of the net profits to Planned Parenthood. If you buy a tube of Outrage, $5 will go towards the ACLU. The goal of this project is not only to ensure funding for these important groups, but to raise awareness about what they do and who they help (hint: everyone).

Planned Parenthood is an organization that offers access to affordable health care, including birth control, pelvic exams, STI testing and much more. They promote healthy sex lives for all genders and sexualities, especially women of color and other minority groups. The American Civil Liberties Union, or ACLU for short, fights for individual rights of many oppressed groups. They believe that everyone deserves liberty and will stop at nothing to accomplish this goal. These organizations are a vital part of people’s health and well-being, meaning the Lipstick Lobby’s priorities are straight.

Each lipstick shade pairs with a campaign. Kiss My Pink is all about lip statements. Not only are you making a statement with the bright shade, but you can choose a word or phrase of empowerment to wear on your lips. As this shade benefits Planned Parenthood, The Lipstick Lobby’s phrases of choice include those related to the reproductive rights of all women.

As for Outrage, this shade’s campaign promotes labelling yourself. The Lipstick Lobby sees labelling as something to be reclaimed rather than derogatory. The brand is inviting people to find a label that “sends out [their] own message of unity and love,” and share this confidence on social media. Some of their chosen labels are “Live Free,” “Be You, Be True” and “Freedom, Not Fear.”

According to The Lipstick Lobby, they are “a social justice movement for change, progress and equality.” By promoting Planned Parenthood and the ACLU, this brand is empowering currently outspoken groups to take a stand against oppression.

Together, let’s pucker up and #LipstickItToTheMan.
