A Time for Paradox: The Beginning Highlights of New York Fashion Week

By Paige Schultz, Fashion Editor

There is something so delightfully paradoxical about the commencement of spring fashion week each year. After all, fall is a time to celebrate the arrival of pumpkin spice, break out those cashmere sweaters and embrace the dwindling heat as the crispness of autumn returns. It might seem inappropriate or unnatural to ponder what they will wear two seasons from now, but for those dwelling in the realm of fashion, timing is key for proper execution. The fall schedule is put on hold as we wait with baited breath for spring’s best looks. So set down your pumpkin spice latte and embrace the trends of tomorrow: it’s New York Fashion Week!

Trends to watch for:

Alexander Wang’s Innovative Branding
Utilitarian neutrals and structured silhouettes certainly did not scream “spring” at this designer’s show, but the debut of Wang’s new branding strategy made his latest fashions undeniably buzz-worthy. Close-up looks revealed the label’s name intricately woven into the looks for marketing at its finest.

Serious Leg Envy at Altuzarra
It was one of those times when you couldn’t help but gasp. Showing a collection with several looks that featured devilishly sexy thigh-high slits, Altuzarra had everyone’s attention. Unexpected to say the least, this designer’s daytime, office-evoking looks demonstrated a new way to add a dash of sass to woman’s typical professional uniform. Is this style questionable? Perhaps. But it’s certain to have fashionistas baring their legs come springtime.

Christian Siriano’s Tropical Thunder
Tropical, chic, and utterly fabulous, Christian Siriano created his collection inspired by recent travels to the tropics. Drawing on the vivacious nightlife of the Caribbean, Siriano wanted to create a youthful and feminine look that would bring out any woman’s flirtatious side. Styled exceptionally with bright lipstick and head-turning heels, Siriano’s collection is captivating to say the least. No need to bat your eyelashes ladies.

Derek Lam’s Modern Structure
Masculine, minimalistic, and structured, Derek Lam said “buh-bye” to traditional spring-like silhouettes and opted for something a little bit edgier. With boxier shapes defining the vast majority of his looks, this designer used plaid-inspired prints and subtle fringe detailing to add dimension to his creations, evoking a truly modern springtime style.

Rebecca Minkoff’s Latina-Inspired Details
Opting for a fresh take on the traditional spring floral, Rebecca Minkoff’s Latina-inspired designs were especially unique. We loved the impeccable styling that accompanied the gorgeous embroidery of Minkoff’s looks. Halo braids anyone? We can’t get enough!
