Unique style inspirations

Written by Jessica Katz, Lifestyle Editorial Assistant

Experimentation and creativity are such captivating parts of fashion. Although it’s not bad to be basic, following trends can get not only repetitive but boring.

Our adolescent and young years are such a crucial time for growth. As we navigate college and a newfound sense of independence, we gain the opportunity to truly invest in a journey of self-exploration. This means making mistakes and learning from them. This meets meeting new friends and maybe losing some old ones. This means finding out what makes you you, and style is a huge aspect of how we identify ourselves.

I started off my teenage years copying my peers: Lululemon leggings, Brandy Melville tops and Ugg boots. I simply wanted to fit in with the norm, and my style reflected that. Over the years, I slowly started to stray from what my peers were wearing. And as I get older, my personal style continues to flourish.

Having a personal style that reflects your sense of self is crucial, even if you still don’t know who you are yet. Experiment with colors, patterns, styles and trends. And wear what makes you feel most confident and comfortable, regardless of what others think. Below I’ve listed some of my favorite fashion inspirations that are quite bold and unique.

Devon Lee Carlson

Devon Lee Carlson is known for many things — as the co-founder of Wildflower Cases, as a social media vlogger and as the girlfriend of Jesse Rutherford of The Neighbourhood. What I’ve grown to love Devon for, however, is her sense of style.

Her style kind of combines…  everything. Devon loves to mix vintage with high-fashion; she can be spotted with luxury bags but also thrifted baby tees. She also often layers, overlapping a collared white top with an obnoxious printed sweater.

I can’t find one word to describe her aesthetic. Some days, Devin opts for sexier looks, with tight mini dresses, bustier tops and lots of leather. Other days, she sports comfortable athleisure, such as tracksuits or leggings and an oversized hoodie. Most of the time, Devon has a 90s look — low rise pants, graphic tees and lots of bold, colorful accessories.

In an interview with Shop Super Street, Devon defined her style as “comfy and cute,” noting 90s supermodels as her biggest fashion inspiration. She explained her love for vintage clothing and mixing unexpected pieces together, as he really tries to let her personality shine through her outfits.

Clara Perlmutter

Known as @tinyjewishgirl on TikTok, Clara Perlmutter has become notorious for her vivid sense of individuality.

Through social media, Clara has demonstrated that she is not afraid to step outside of the box when it comes to fashion. Her style is like no other. She loves to mix patterns and colors and pile on lots of layers and accessories.

One part of Clara’s ensemble that stands out to me is her creativity and playfulness. For instance, when styling a tie-dye tank top on TikTok, Clara added a bold heart necklace and next, some “tacky” jeggings with a tattoo-like print and bulky, black Ugg boots. She finished the look with an “obnoxious” multicolored fur coat.

In addition to clothes, Clara often plays with makeup. She is often seen with bold lips, colored mascara and shimmery, colorful eyeshadow. In one TikTok, she styled an outfit for class while wearing clown makeup. She “committed” to the striking makeup look by wearing a sparkly top and poofy skirt.

Sydney Belle

Sydney Belle, or @thesydneybelle on TikTok, exudes confidence like no other. According to her TikTok bio, she considers herself the “Modern-day Paris Hilton,” which is a bold statement, but I’d have to agree.

Sydney took the y2k aesthetic and made it her own. She wears lots of 90s and early 2000s bimbo-like pieces, but in a modernized way. Her regular outfits include velour tracksuits, bodycon dresses, and crop tops with low-rise bottoms.

She often adds an extra oomph to her outfits, with a bold accessory or piece. This includes fluffy faux fur boots in both pink and blue, over-the-top ruffled masks and big, BIG sunglasses.

Regardless of if she’s wearing her skeleton patterned pajamas or the smallest mini skirt you’ll ever lay your eyes on, Sydney’s confidence pulls together every outfit. She’s constantly dancing and posing in her videos. It’s admirable, and we love to see it.
