Café Review: Indie Coffee

Indie Coffee, located on Regent Street, might be a little south of the trek most students make to class, but don’t let that be an excuse not to visit. With a bright atmosphere, live music, and great coffee, Indie Coffee is worth the small detour.
The first thing any coffeehouse-lover notices about a café is the ambiance. While sometimes cafés have a feeling so cozy that a coffee is the only hope to staying awake, Indie Coffee evokes the opposite. From the bright, indie pop art posters to the yellow walls and sun revealing windows, the atmosphere of Indie Coffee welcomes the customer with a boost of energy.
If you’re looking for an antisocial environment, Indie Coffee might not be the hangout for you. Already bustling by 8:30 a.m., chatter between friends flood the small café. But, if you like to talk or don’t mind background noise, this venue’s personable feel makes it an enjoyable place to spend your morning. The café also provides an outdoor patio for those seeking a bit of fresh air while enjoying their coffee or tea.
As far as their coffee goes, Indie Coffee offers an international variety. Six single origins are brewed each day and include Ethiopia, El Salvador, New Guinea, Uganda, Sumatra, just to name a few. One of their most popular coffee types is their own House Blend, which owner J.J. Kilmer described as “full-bodied” and “perfectly roasted.” For those who have a bit of a sweet tooth, Indie Coffee’s mochas are just the trick. Made with creamy Ghirardelli chocolate, it’s not hard to understand why they’re a best seller. Indie Coffee also uses their own spices to jazz up drinks. “Cardamom is a new addition to a lot of drinks and people have really liked it,” said Kilmer.
Coffee isn’t the only thing on the menu, of course. Under the categories Waffles, Sandwiches, and Salads, you can find waffles decked out in fruit and nuts, bagels topped with cheese and veggies, creative sandwiches on focaccia, and delicious sounding salads.
While live entertainment isn’t always associated with cafés, Kilmer says Indie Coffee sets itself apart by hosting mostly musical acts and occasional indie film screenings. All shows are free, but donations are encouraged as they help pay bands’ touring expenses.
