On March 2, 2022, we celebrated the incredibly talented women in the music industry. While we adore all these ladies, not all their looks hit the mark. Nonetheless, they all looked beautiful and killed the carpet with confidence. Here are some of our favorite and least favorite looks from Billboard’s Women in Music.
Best Dressed
Doja Cat oozed confidence in an eye-catching black Carolina Herrera gown with a plunging neckline and a flurry of black tulle at the waist (Johnson, 2022). She topped off the look with dazzling silver jewelry, dramatic winged eyeliner and a pair of fluttery faux lashes. We love the sex appeal of this dress, but the shape is what gives it extra oomph. The look is alluring and inventive; Doja is the moment, and she knows it.
We are a complete sucker for a colorful ensemble, so Tinashe stole the show. Her Christopher John Rogers vibrant polka-dotted dress was the perfect choice (Moon, 2022). She seamlessly blends red carpet glam and sophistication with playfulness and personal style, leaving me excited for her future red carpet looks.
Staying true to her personal style, Phoebe Bridgers graced the award show in a cream-colored Gucci pantsuit with a beaded ruffled shirt and boy tie (Larson, 2022). The jacket’s shoulder pads added the perfect amount of drama without swallowing Bridgers. The look was paired with lug-soled boots, which were right on trend for the season. Bridgers accepted Billboard’s Trailblazer Award, and we can’t wait to see how she’ll also continue to trailblaze fashion.
Doechii walked straight out of a sci-fi movie and onto the carpet in a silver mini dress and matching gloves designed by Seyit Ares (Rae, 2022). The details of this look are astounding; the sweetheart neckline and cupcake fit hugged Doechii’s body perfectly, and the bold gems added the perfect pop of color. With her gelled-up finger waves, dramatic shiny shadow and long silver, bedazzled nails, we can’t tell if Doechii looks like the hottest alien or robot, but either way, we love it.
Biggest Flops
Tate McRae donned a Prada ensemble if it wasn’t obvious from the logo on her chest (Reagan, 2022). We are getting a little sick of logo-mania, especially on red carpets. Just because something is designer does not mean it is stylish. McRae had a mesh unitard under the matching skirt and tube top set, and it threw off the look. We love her music, but McRae deserves improvement from her styling team.
Dixie D’Amelio walked the carpet in a boring, ill-fitted black suit designed by Valentino (D’Amelio, 2022). Although D’Amelio is new to red carpet fashion, we would’ve loved to see something edgier from the rising musician. We don’t have much to say other than step it up!
We love Mugler, and NIKI looks absolutely beautiful, but her look misses the mark for us (Zefanya, 2022). The little black dress is too simple, and the singer looks like she’s ready for a night out–not a night at an award show. High school seniors everywhere would kill for this as a homecoming look, which makes it the wrong choice for a red carpet.
Olivia Holt was spotted in a pale blue ensemble designed by Salvatore Ferragamo (Holt, 2022). The asymmetrical, cut-out dress seems to be an attempt at current trends, but to be honest, it looks like she took some scrubs and cut them up. Overall, the look is very meh.
