Not so pretty in pink

Best Dressed

This is how you do a red carpet. Cynthia Erivo stole the spotlight in a red vinyl strapless gown and faux fur cape embroidered with red and silver chains, designed by Nicolas Ghesquière, Creative Director of Louis Vuitton (SAG Awards 2022 Red Carpet Live: All the Fashion, Outfits & Looks, 2022). Her inspiration for the night was music legend Arethra Franklin, whom Erivo portrays in the limited serious “Genius” (Okwodu, 2022). In an interview with Vogue, Erivo shared, “[Franklin] was so exciting with her style and fashion choices… She was never not risky, always took it with a pinch of salt, and had a bit of fun with it.” Erivo certainly committed to the glamor of Franklin’s fashion; her look is daring and inventive, yet compelling and seductive.

Helen Mirren, recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award, looked angelic in a pale pink long-sleeve gown with whimsical floral adornments designed by Dolce & Gabbana (SAG Awards 2022 Red Carpet Live: All the Fashion, Outfits & Looks, 2022). The look is soft, dainty and beautifully cohesive from head to toe. For makeup, Mirren went with pink shimmering pink eyeshadow, swirls of petaled blush and a peony-painted lip. Her silver updo was topped with a pale pink headband, and she accessorized with dazzling pink jewelry designed by Harry Winston.

Leslie Odom Jr. was a walking polka dot in a Balmain black, spotted suit and white, spotted button-up, and we are obsessed (SAG Awards 2022 Red Carpet Live: All the Fashion, Outfits & Looks, 2022). This look is unique, yet does not feel tacky. The slightly oversized blazer and matching flare pants fit him perfectly, and his Omega watch and pointy black boots are the perfect accessories to top off this look.

We love the prints and patterns on this year’s carpet, including Andrew Garfield who sported a striped Saint Laurent suit and Omega watch (SAG Awards 2022 Red Carpet Live: All the Fashion, Outfits & Looks, 2022). Stylist Warren Alfie Baker revealed that he and Garfield found inspiration in The Beatles’ Documentary, “Get Back” (Brookins, 2022). With a long blazer and bell-leg bottoms, the look is a successfully executed ode to ‘70s British style.

Laverne Cox dazzled in a custom Michael Fausto gown (Laverne Cox in Custom Michael Fausto - 28th Annual Screen - 11, 2022). Cox is the pinnacle of elegance and strength with her baroque armor-inspired bodice and incredibly flattering skirt silhouette. She, who always knows how to make a red carpet moment, accessorized with a feathered stole and the most amazing Judith Leiber clutch.

Biggest Flops

Ariana DeBose walked the carpet in an ill-fitting Valentino Haute Couture strapless pink gown and De Beers jewelry (SAG Awards 2022 Red Carpet Live: All the Fashion, Outfits & Looks, 2022). Oh, and we did not forget about the giant clump of material on the back that almost exactly resembles an airbag; we are just as confused as you are.

Dasha Nekrasova also wore a hot pink gown designed by Valentino, and we also dislike it (SAG Awards 2022 Red Carpet Live: All the Fashion, Outfits & Looks, 2022). Not only does the neckline feel resemblant to the 2016 criss-cross trend, but overall, the gown does absolutely nothing for Nekrasova.

Men in suits… They disappoint us every time on every carpet. We will need a formal apology from Evan Peters, Tyler Perry, Bradley Cooper, Tim McGraw, Luke Grimes and as much as we love this beautiful man, Jamie Dornan.

We wanted to see more from The Morning Show star, Julianna Marguiles. Her fuschia Narciso Rodriguez gown leaves us underwhelmed (SAG Awards 2022 Red Carpet Live: All the Fashion, Outfits & Looks, 2022). The dress feels like it’s been done many times before, and the styling is simply boring. We would have loved to see something more exciting with jewelry or hair.
