The Queen of Halloween
Looking back on Heidi Klum’s elite annual extravaganza
Written by Ava McNarney, Contributing Writer
Every Oct. the fashion world awaits one of the season’s most well-known events—nothing other than Heidi Klum’s Halloween party. While Madison preps for Freakfest and other Halloween festivities, some of the most high-profile celebrities prepare for the yearly event. Although the pandemic continues to put a stop to some of the usual celebrations, it’s still totally possible to be safe and have a great time dressing up in costume.
Due to the circumstances of the time, the starlet has unfortunately confessed for the second year in a row to feeling as if it would be “insensitive” to host amid pandemic-related concerns. With slim chances of even New York City’s A-listers getting their hands on a ticket, it’s easy to feel as if this year’s Halloween won’t be as memorable as it has been in the past. However, a glance back at the fabulous costumes of Klum’s parties from years before reminds us that there’s always time for a little frightening fun, no matter the year (2021).
Although wild costumes may draw the most attention, plenty of guests have put their own personal spin on a ‘cliche’ look. Australian model Halima Aden didn’t come to play. She looked absolutely stunning as Maleficent at the 2019 party, dressed in black from head to toe and adorned with a phenomenal feather boa. Not only does she make a remarkable and sultry supervillain, but she also took the look to the next level with noteworthy details such as the metallic quality of her robe. The recognizability of her character only added to the potency of class she desired to achieve. Sometimes a tried and true Halloween classic is just what you need, whether it be a cat, a superhero or a vampire-- and that’s perfectly fine! As always, a unique twist never hurts (Sayej, 2019).
As elegant as the old classics are, Klum’s red carpets are no stranger to the eccentric. Actress and model Michelle Trachtenberg couldn’t have taken the idea of getting “dolled up” more literally for the 2011 event. Her striped mini dress accented with a gorgeous black tulle overskirt and bow surely turned heads all night. She didn’t stop there, but paired the look with an intensely blue full-body makeup look to dramatize her doll-like transformation even further. If you’re looking to stand out, the addition of outlandish makeup to an exquisite getup never fails to make a splash (Merriam, 2011).
While creating a unique look is plenty of fun, many guests have taken a very different approach by donning a look inspired entirely by an idol, from the Olsen twins to Cher. Celebrities: they’re just like us! The Queen of Halloween herself took this to an extreme when she arrived at her 2016 party looking runway ready and surrounded by five identical twins! Her entourage went as far as using prosthetic makeup in order to resemble Klum as closely as possible. This bold statement can be taken as inspiration to dress up this Halloween as any of the trendiest stars right now or a long-time treasured favorite (Garrity, 2021).
The options are endless. Sometimes, so endless that the only thing the build-up to the holiday leaves us feeling is stress. It doesn’t have to be that way! From inside to outside of the box, we have a plethora of striking looks from the past to take inspiration from. Whatever you choose to live it up in, have a blast and stay safe this Halloween.
