Dressing for Spring: Wisconsin Edition

Our MODA guide for spring fashion in the cold

By Clara Padgham, Contributing Writer

You are probably well aware of the unpredictable weather that accompanies your walks to class. March left students wondering if they should pull out their parkas or shorts. Because of this, I have compiled Moda’s guide to dressing for the Wisconsin spring.

Wear bright colors

Spring clothing should reflect the fresh and new season! One of my favorite ways to dress myself to brace the dreariness is through bright colors. Look for fuschia sweaters to break the gloom of the days or invest in spring staples that have a pop of happy colors, such as a bright yellow puffer or teal rain boots. And of course, the most important spring garment is a raincoat, so look for one that cloaks you in brightness.

Incorporate spring-like textiles

Spring encapsulates all things romantic and flirty, so dress like it! Think textiles like lace and chiffon. Try to incorporate elements of lace into everyday looks and look for flowy silhouettes. Depop has many pieces that incorporate chiffon, as it is another reemerging ‘90s trend. Ruffle skirts will continue to have their moment, so look to brands like LoveShackFancy, SABO, For Love & Lemons and Lulus. Closer to campus, check out re-thread, Good Style Shop and Anthropologie. Also since spring can still be frigid, layering will be your best friend. If the day is cold, throw a warm sweater over a linen shirt for a fresh but still insulating look. This final additive layer of  lightweight fabric will add a dimension of spring to your wardrobe.

Try something new

Rebirth is my personal theme of the season. If there’s one piece of fashion advice I can offer through this article, it is to step out of your comfort zone. Life is too short to not experiment with all different styles of clothing. If romance trends wouldn't be your first go-to, maybe incorporate them into your wardrobe starting with accessories, whether it be ruffled socks or a Blair Waldorf-esque headband. Hopefully, you’ll discover your new favorite piece and dress in a way that makes you feel confident and happy within your own skin.
