Fashion News Recap: Spring 2014 NYFW

Drama was already brewing on the first day of Fashion Week when People’s Revolution dropped out of the David Tlale show a mere 24 hours before it was set to start. People’s Rev’s infamous owner, Kelly Cutrone, pulled the plug on participation after claiming that they never received full payment. Tlale admitted to being behind on payments, but said he was planning on sending the remaining portion. Acting in true character, Cutrone made it clear that she wasn’t willing to wait.
Designer Ann Yee pulled inspiration from Detroit’s history in automobile production and played with a pastel color palette in creating her spring 2014 collection Titled, “Resurgence,” Yee captured the essence of her Michigan hometown by incorporating mutli-faceted metallic shades. In an effort to represent the hopeful rebirth and rise of Detroit after its dreadful downward spiral, Yee took advantage of the pastel comeback to emphasize the city’s fresh, new start. Metaphorically symbolic and utterly chic, Yee utilized her artistic talents to boldly create a collection that truly meant something – an act that many designers don’t have the capacity to do.
It was certainly a liberating Fashion Week for plus-sized fashionistas, as this past week marked the first plus-sized fashion line showcase in the event’s history. On an equally impressive note, designer Eden Miller fundraised for the line, titled “Cabiria,” through Kickstarter. Thus, after 60 years in the making, plus-sized models are officially granted the opportunity to walk down the runway at New York Fashion Week.
The intensely creative minds behind automaker Lexus were also hard at work during Fashion Week when the company presented a live fashion performance, as opposed to a standard runway show. When you’re trying to outshine Mercedes-Benz, the auto-making stronghold of New York Fashion Week, you need to be up to par on creativity. The performance was complete with holographs and star studded cameos by the Olsen Twins, Sarah Jessica Parker, and André Leon Talley.
After flooding the runway in oceanic-inspired fashion, designer Peter Som waltzed on stage to showcase his iPhone. The designer graced the runway following the presentation of his spring 2014 collection where he proceeded to snap a selfie; refusing to hesitate as he halted the show and created more buzz about his upcoming line in the process.
