While many designer collections realize our style fantasies, a select few runway shows achieve icon status. These expert curations of models, music, venues, and fashion create synergies—when combined, resulting in productions greater than the clothes alone. As a result, every aspect of presenting a fashion show can make or break how viewers interpret the collection.

For example, Louis Vuitton’s Spring/Summer 2012 Collection embraced a whimsical mood using a carousel as a backdrop. This pale yellow number cascaded down the runway eliciting a playful pastel dream. However, the coordinating umbrella emblazoned with the company’s signature monogram would not appear nearly as magical toted by a pedestrian in New York City. The show’s fantastical ambiance gives the umbrella a light, fun quality as opposed to a functional purpose.

The extravagant yet spooky setting of Dior’s Spring/Summer 1998 Collection set the tone for the show. This brocaded pant and duster set would look vastly different showcased in the ethereal Palace of Versailles. The models’ wild hairstyles also added to the over the top experience, telling a chilling visual story rather than just launching a new collection.

Yves Saint Laurent’s Spring/Summer 2019 collection debuted in Paris under the Eiffel Tower. The models looked undeniably glamorous strutting under the sparkling lights of the city’s most iconic landmark. This crisp metallic blazer would not have the same allure in any other setting, water dancing off the runway making the piece come to life beyond fashion fans’ wildest dreams.

Ultimately, designers must compose exciting visual stories to give their collections elevated context. These iconic synergies of music, models, fashion, and creative talent embody the dreamlike world of high fashion and leave viewers wanting more.
